a. The Interscalene approach:

  • Similar principles as adult human
  • The pig does not have a clavicle
  • Sterno-(cleido)-mastoid muscle is small
  • Sternum clear and mastoid clear
  • Emphasis on nerve stimulator assisted catheter placement

b. The Axillary approach to the brachial plexus:

  • Exactly the same as humans
  • Feel for axillary artery
  • Identify nerves individually with nerve stimulator
  • First percutaneous and then transcutaneously
