a. Intrapleural block:

Following the continuous nerve block session, spontaneous breathing by the animal is established and intrapleural blocks are demonstrated and practiced. The Pleurocert manufactured by BBraun is used for this purpose but a technique making use of a Tuohy needle, an epidural catheter, a three-way tap and a column of saline is also demonstrated.

At the end of the workshop the heart of the anaesthetized animal is arrested by an intravenous injection of an overdose of KCl and after exsanguination the various catheters are dissected out to confirm correct catheter placement.

The Animal session typically lasts 8 hours
